Whether I'm travelling for 5 days, or 5 months, there are a number of things that I always pack in my suitcase or carry-on that I use time and time again. I always try and make sure everything I take with me earns its keep, as I hate to see unnecessary space being taken up that could be used for bringing back keepsakes or food from a trip!
These are the best travel accessories I've found to help me on my journey from going to the airport to arriving at my destination.
PACKING CUBES
Packing cubes have been an absolute god-send and a true lifesaver when I've been travelling long-term. I've not needed them as much when I've been using a carry-on, but when I've had a bigger suitcase or a backpack, these have been great for keeping my clothes clean, separated and stops them from creasing as much as having them loose.
Using a set of three, I'm able to pack my underwear, t-shirts and shorts, and any bulky items that are hard to roll efficiently, and if I'm in a rush and need to get something quickly, I know exactly where it is.
SLEEPING MASK & EARPLUGS
When travelling at obscene times of the night, there is nothing worse than trying to catch some shut-eye with the lights turned on and screaming children in the seats behind you. Talking from personal experience here.
It wasn't until I finally got myself a sleeping mask (which also came with free earplugs) that I realised what I had been missing out on. Gone were the days of trying desperately to cover my eyes with my jumper - now I take this mask on every flight I go on in case I feel like taking a nap.
WIPES/HAND SANITIZER
Now, I'm definitely not a germaphobe, but I always feel a little bit disgusting after travelling for more than a few hours. Is it the fact that I'm sat in the same seat for that long, me sharing a confined space with a load of other people or both?
To make me feel a little better, I always bring some wipes, like these ones from Ecooking*, and/or hand sanitizer with me so I can wipe down any areas I'll be using, and also clean my hands before eating. It can be so easy to catch something when travelling, but this reduces the chances by a little.
LUGGAGE SCALE
Probably my favourite travel accessory I've ever bought. This luggage scale was essential when backpacking to make sure I didn't go over the luggage weight allowance, and I've used it on every trip since.
It's small and light enough to be tucked into a corner of your bag and gives you the peace of mind that you won't be unpacking and rearranging everything at the airport to be under the allowance.
PLUG ADAPTER
This one may seem obvious, but in the past, I've ended up using adapters that are quite bulky which isn't great if I'm going to a few different countries that use different sockets. This adapter is perfect if you're going to be doing the same, and is travel-friendly in that all the plugs lock into each other and fits into a neat little case. No more hunting around for a lost adapter at the bottom of your bag!
In the future, I'll be looking to upgrade to a multi USB adapter, but for now, this one works perfectly for what I need.
KINDLE
If you had said to me 5 years ago that I would love using a Kindle, I wouldn't have believed you. But it's true! I never knew I needed a Kindle until it was bought for me as a gift, and I haven't looked back since.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of a physical book and my Kindle will never replace that, but when it comes to travelling it's the perfect option when I can't decide what book to take with! I can browse titles to my heart's content, and not have to worry about the extra weight in my bag if I want to read several books on one trip.
BUMBAG
All hail the bumbag, the perfect travel accessory! Bumbags have become an essential especially when I'm actually travelling as there's nothing worse than not having your passport or tickets to hand.
This one from Shein* is the perfect size to fit everything in, and lies really flat to your body so that it isn't an obvious target for pickpocketers and easy to hide if your airline is hot on how many bags you can take...
FACIAL SPRAY
There have been a number of times when I'm travelling when I've felt my skin start to dry up and having a hydrating spray within reach has really helped soothe it. A favourite of mine is the L'Occitane Aqua Réotier Moisturizing Mist* due to the fact that it's lightweight, small enough to pop into my bumbag and gives my skin the boost of moisture it needs thanks to the hyaluronic acid in it. It can also double up as a makeup-fixing spray while you're on holiday to stop your makeup melting off in the heat.
